Kinga Mobile user guide

Everything you need to send and receive mobile money safely with Kinga Mobile.

Kinga Mobile is a test-mode prototype. No real money moves, and identity checks and text messages are simulated. Use made-up details only, never your real Ghana Card or MoMo PIN.

1. Getting started

You need a Ghana mobile number on MTN, Telecel or AirtelTigo, and your Ghana Card.

  1. Open Kinga Mobile and tap Create account.
  2. Enter your mobile number and tap Send code. We text you a 6-digit code (in the demo it appears on the simulated phone).
  3. Enter the code, your name, a handle (a short name people can pay you at, like @ama) and a password of at least 12 characters.
  4. Tap Create account. You're taken to Account setup, which shows a checklist of what's left and highlights the next step.

In Personal details, enter your full legal name, date of birth and address as they appear on your Ghana Card. They're stored encrypted.

2. Verify with your Ghana Card

  1. In Identity verification, enter your Ghana Card number (it looks like GHA-123456789-0) and your date of birth exactly as printed on the card.
  2. Tap Start verification and take a selfie on our identity partner's page. It's compared with the photo on the national register.
  3. When it's approved, the name on the register becomes your verified name. That's the name other people see when they pay you.

If verification is declined

  • Card not found: check the number and try again.
  • Date of birth doesn't match: enter it exactly as on the card.
  • Card already used: each Ghana Card can only be used for one Kinga Mobile account. Contact us if you think someone else used yours.

3. PIN and fingerprint approval

Every payment needs your approval. Set a 6-digit PIN in Transaction PIN(not repeated or in sequence, like 111111 or 123456).

On a phone with a fingerprint, face unlock or screen lock, you can also turn on Fingerprint or face approval: enter your PIN once, then follow your phone's prompt. After that, payment screens show aConfirm with fingerprint or face button. Your fingerprint and face never leave your phone.

Never tell anyone your PIN. If you enter it wrongly 5 times it locks for 30 minutes; contact us if you need it unlocked sooner.

4. Link your MoMo wallet

  1. In MoMo wallet, tap Link my MoMo wallet and choose your network.
  2. You can only link the wallet on your own verified number, and it must be registered in the same name as your Ghana Card.
  3. If the names only partly match (for example a missing middle name), our team checks it and we text you when it's ready. If they don't match, the wallet can't be linked.

5. Add money

  1. Go to Bank & funds (on phones: Money in the bottom bar).
  2. In Add money, enter the amount, then confirm with your fingerprint or PIN.
  3. Approve the request on your phone when your network asks. Only ever enter your MoMo PIN on your network's own prompt.
  4. The money shows in your balance once your network confirms it, usually within seconds, and we text you the new balance.

6. Send money

  1. Tap Send. Choose A person, then enter their mobile number (or @handle) and the amount. Add a note if you like.
  2. Tap Review. Check Who you're paying: their verified name, the name on their MoMo wallet, and whether the two match.
  3. If everything is right, tap Send with fingerprint or face, or enter your PIN and tap Send with PIN.

Payments between Kinga Mobile accounts arrive instantly. Check the details carefully: payments to the wrong person can't always be recovered.

7. Warnings and payments on hold

Each payment is checked for signs of fraud. Depending on what we find:

  • Goes straight through: nothing unusual.
  • Warning: for example, the names don't match, or it's a large first payment to someone new. Read the warning; to continue you must tick that nobody is pressuring you.
  • On hold: higher-risk payments are checked by our team first. Your balance isn't charged until it's released, and we text you either way.
  • Blocked: the number has been confirmed as a scam number. Your money stays with you.
If you see a warning while someone is on the phone telling you to ignore it, stop. That's exactly what scammers do.

8. Receiving money and SMS alerts

Give people your mobile number or @handle. When money arrives you get a text like: "Kinga Mobile: You received GH₵25.00 from KOFI MENSAH (+23324•••567). New balance GH₵125.00."

We also text you when you send money, add money or cash out, when a payment is held or stopped, when a number you paid is confirmed as a scam, and when your PIN, password or fingerprint devices change.

Always check the balance in the app. Scammers send fake "you received" texts. If someone asks you to return money they "sent by mistake", don't: report it (see below).

9. Cash out to MoMo

  1. Go to Bank & funds and find Cash out.
  2. Enter the amount and confirm with your fingerprint or PIN.
  3. The money is sent to your linked MoMo wallet and we text you when it arrives.

10. Paying a business

On Send, choose A business and search for its name or @handle. Businesses are verified before they can accept payments. A small fee may be paid by the business, never by you; the review screen shows what they receive.

11. Staying safe

  • Kinga Mobile, MoMo and bank staff will never ask for your PIN, password or codes.
  • Didn't expect a payment? Open it and choose I didn't expect this payment. Don't send money back yourself.
  • Got a scam call or text? On Send, use Report a scam number. Once confirmed, the number is blocked for everyone.
  • Paid someone because you were tricked, or paid the wrong person? Open the payment and use Something wrong? straight away.
  • Phone lost signal suddenly? It could be a SIM swap. Contact your network and us immediately.

12. Your account's security

  • Change your password: tap Password at the top of the app.
  • Change your PIN: Account → Transaction PIN.
  • Lost your phone: contact us. We can sign you out everywhere and remove its fingerprint approval; then add your new phone in Account.
  • Locked out: 5 wrong passwords lock sign-in for 15 minutes; 5 wrong PINs lock payments for 30 minutes. We can unlock you after confirming who you are.
  • Account paused: if we see signs of fraud we may pause your account to protect you. You can't sign in until it's restored; your money stays safe.

13. Getting help

Open any payment and use Something wrong? to open a case about it. Our team can see your account to help you, but only with your details masked. When you call, we may ask for your date of birth to confirm it's you; we will never ask for your PIN, password or codes.

14. Frequently asked questions

Why does Kinga Mobile show me the other person's name?

So you can be sure you're paying the right person. If the name isn't who you expect, don't pay.

Why was my payment put on hold?

It looked unusual, for example a large first payment to someone new. Our team checks it, usually quickly, and we text you the result. Nothing leaves your balance meanwhile.

Can I use someone else's MoMo wallet?

No. You can only link the wallet on your own verified number, registered in your own name. This stops stolen or borrowed wallets being used for fraud.

Is my fingerprint stored by Kinga Mobile?

No. Your phone checks your fingerprint or face and only sends us a one-time signature.

I didn't receive my sign-up code.

Wait a minute and tap Send a new code. You can request 3 codes every 10 minutes; each lasts 5 minutes.

Can I close my account?

Yes. Cash out your balance first, then contact us. Closing needs a second member of our team to approve it.

Does it work without the internet?

Not yet. Access by USSD for basic phones is planned.

15. Trying the demo

  • Use any made-up Ghana number to sign up; the code appears on the simulated phone, along with all the SMS alerts that number would get.
  • Made-up Ghana Card numbers work. Numbers ending in 000-x aren't found; 999-xhas a different name; 888-x has a different date of birth (9 March 1985).
  • Wallet numbers ending in 998 give a partial name match (sent for review); ending in 999 don't match.
  • Paying 055 999 9999 shows the name-mismatch warning; a first payment of more than GH₵1,000 to someone new is held for review.
  • Top-ups and cash-outs use Paystack's test mode: no real wallet is charged.
