Staying safe from MoMo scams

Scammers rely on pressure and surprise. These are the tricks we see most often, and what to do instead.

Kinga Mobile will never call or text you to ask for your PIN, password or a one-time code. Anyone who asks is a scammer, even if they know your name or say they're from MTN, Telecel, AirtelTigo, a bank or Kinga Mobile.

Common scams

“I sent money to you by mistake”

You get a fake "payment received" text, or a real small payment, then a call begging you to send it back. Check your real balance in the app. If you didn't expect the payment, don't send anything: tap I didn't expect this payment on it and we'll handle it.

Fake customer care

Someone claiming to be MoMo or bank staff says your account will be blocked unless you share a code or approve a prompt. Hang up. Real staff never need your PIN or codes.

Too-good-to-be-true offers

Prizes, promotions, jobs or loans that need a "fee" first. If you must pay to receive money, it's a scam.

Pressure and urgency

"Pay now or lose it", a relative "in trouble", a seller who won't wait. Slow down and call the person on a number you already know.

Wrong name on the wallet

The person says they're Kwame, but the wallet is registered to someone else. Stop: that's the moment to ask questions.

SIM swap

Your phone suddenly loses signal and you can't make calls. Contact your network and Kinga Mobile at once: someone may have taken over your number.

How Kinga Mobile protects you

If something goes wrong

  1. Don't send more money or share any codes.
  2. Open the payment in the app and tap Something wrong? to report it, or use Report a scam number on the Send page.
  3. If you think someone has access to your account, change your password and PIN, and ask us to sign you out everywhere and remove fingerprint devices.
